Set where the Mabou and Southwest Mabou rivers meet — a name derived from the Mi’kmaq word Malabo, meaning “place where two rivers meet” — the community blends Indigenous history with the strong Scottish Gaelic heritage that shaped its farms, halls, churches, and cultural institutions.

Today, Mabou is celebrated as one of Cape Breton’s cultural heartlands, home to landmarks like An Drochaid Museum, The Red Shoe Pub, Beinn Mhàbu, and Glenora Distillers, all of which anchor its reputation for music, dance, storytelling, and community gatherings.

Though small in population, Mabou has an outsized cultural footprint — a place where everyday life, Gaelic language revival, outdoor recreation, and a welcoming community spirit all meet along the river and sea.
