During a trip back home a number of years ago, my grandmother gave me some copies of local Folk Art which is used to decorate the outer skin of winter jackets.

Of course the northern wildlife is represented,

Along with part of the heritage of Dog Teams,

And also included some of Labradors fauna, like the Partridge (Red) Berry.

THE ODE TO LABRADOR

Dear land of mountains, woods and snow,
Labrador our Labrador
God's noble gifts to us we know,
Labrador our Labrador,
Thy proud resources waiting still,
their splendid task will soon fulfill,
Obedient to thy Maker's will,
Labrador our Labrador.

Thy stately forests soon shall ring,
Labrador our Labrador.
Responsive to the woodmans' ring,
Labrador our Labrador.
And mighty floods that long remained
Shall serve the purpose God ordained,
Labrador our Labrador.

We love to climb thy mountains steep,
Labrador our Labrador.
Or paddle on thy waters deep,
Labrador our Labrador.
Our snowshoes scar the trackless plains,
we seek no city streets nor lanes.
We are thy sons while life remains,
Labrador our Labrador.

WebMaster Note:

Northwest River is where I grew up. Today that area is known as Sheshashiu. Labrador is a beautiful land.

Labrador has seen many changes over the years.

Who knows when Labrador was first visited. If it was in the winter months, we know they probably didn't stay very long. The Vikings have been proven to have settled in a small settlement in Northen Labrador, but I am pretty sure the Polar bear and Trout where there first along with the Caribou.

The Innu are decendents of the people who where part of a great migration who followed the great herds over the land bridge between today's Russia and Alaska.
